Is dark chocolate vegan? Dove, Green & Black, and more – 2023

Everyone is a chocolate lover to some extent. Vegans know to avoid milk chocolate and similar products such as Nutella – as you can tell from the name, it contains dairy unless made with plant milk and stated so. And the same applies to white chocolate. But what about dark chocolate?

Dark chocolate has a higher cacao content, leaving less room for animal-based ingredients. But that does not mean that every dark chocolate you see on the grocery store’s shelf is suitable for vegan folks. However, finding entirely plant-based dark chocolate is easy – there are loads out there! Let’s talk about some well-known brands, what to keep in mind and what to look out for next time you’re on a hunt for a chocolate bar.

Is dark chocolate vegan?

Dark chocolate is a type of chocolate with a high content of cocoa mass and an intense, slightly bitter taste. Also, They contain a high amount of iron. However, that does not mean that they aren’t often used. So, how to figure out whether a dark chocolate bar is vegan-friendly or not?

How to find vegan dark chocolate?

Fortunately, finding a dark chocolate bar suitable for a vegan diet isn’t too hard. But there is a great tip to keep in mind to make the process as fast and stress-free as possible.
